GFA must help educate football fans on laws of the game – Rtd. referee Wilson Sey

Retired referee Wilson Sey has urged the Ghana Football Association to help educate football fans on laws governing the game.

Mr Wilson was speaking to Accra based Class FM on the 21st anniversary of the May 9th disaster
He is of the view that football fans must be educated to know the laws and that will ensure they do not misbehave when a certain decision is made on the field by referees.

“They are not learning because we are not educating them, in education the referee Association can’t do it because they don’t have the funding to do it. It is costly, so the FA is in a good position to solicit for funds. Even if they can’t do that, they need to attach some retired referees to the clubs to educate them.”
The 21st anniversary of the May 9th disaster was observed yesterday.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Accra Sports Stadium, where 127 football fans died after a stampede at the ground.
The incident happened during a league match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko when spectators had to scramble their way out of the ground as they sought relief from tear gas canisters that were being fired at them by police officers seeking to control angry spectators.
Every year, victims of the disaster are remembered, where a wreath-laying ceremony usually happens at the Accra Sports Stadium.
